The best advice I ever heard for lawyers is “don’t take a case if you don’t care about the result.” My twenty years of practicing law confirm how true that is. A lawyer who cares about the result of the case will go to court well-prepared. A lawyer who cares about the result will pay attention to details. A lawyer who cares about the result will treat the client as a human being, not just some person who needs their attention.
Before you hire a lawyer, of course you want to know if the lawyer is good. Of course you want to know how much the lawyer charges. However, don’t hire a lawyer unless you can also see that they care about what happens to you. Did the lawyer show any interest in who you are, not just what your legal situation is? Did the lawyer take time to make sure you got a clear explanation of what the law is, and what your options are? Did the lawyer show that they are on your side?
There are plenty of good lawyers out there. Hopefully, there are lawyers you can afford. However, be sure to find the lawyer who cares about your result. You wouldn’t date someone who didn’t care about the result of the relationship. Likewise, don’t hire a lawyer who doesn’t care about the result of the case.
